Many of Lansend’s clients  stayed in touch with their clients  by either sending  faxes  or bulk emails also known as mass emails. By the end of year 2004 most of the major E-mail service provides such as Yahoo, MSN & AOL were imposing severe restrictions on bulk Emails sent to their subscribers spam or otherwise. Yahoo , MSN & AOL began rerouting bulk E-mail that were emailed ( cc or bcc) to 5 or more of their subscribers to special holding servers that would further analyze the bulk E-mails to verify if they were legitimate or spam. Sometimes these mass E-mails although legitimate were now being delayed by more than a day or even worse arbitrarily designated as Spam & deleted. For any business including small business delays of hours or days in communicating with clients was simply not acceptable Large corporations & fortune 500 companies invested thousands if not millions dollars in sophisticated applications that would send properly formatted  bulk E-mail to all their clients , vendors, investors etc that would not be mis-identified as spam & thereby delayed by their respective E-mail servers. As is the norm the small business was left to fend for it self. Most commercially available applications were either to expensive for the small business, or not user friendly enough for the small business owner.
